Held in The Leaves
By: Ruby Nelson
The leaves’ colors started fading away
And so did you
I had left when the leaves were green and full of life
Now they are dried up and burnt to the touch
I had spent too much time inside an epitome of isolation
I realize that you have changed colors, too
The bright light in your soul had shriveled up into dark matter
Did the leaves do this?
Did they burn you with a thousand touches?
Did the concept of time heal what I could not?
Did the leaves tell you why I did it
Did they whisper a thousand little lies as they blew past your ear
I had something to say; the breeze sucked my words right out of me
Was I too late? Too late to fix what the whispers told you
The leaves are changing again
Yet I am stuck in this loop
A loop of green leaves and life all around me
Too scared to leave, for I know what will happen next
Did I miss you too late?
